Generative engine optimization

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization, GEO, is the practice of making a brand visible inside AI-generated answers. When an AI assistant answers a buying question, it names brands and cites sources. GEO is the work of becoming one of them.

The shift behind it is simple. A search engine returns a list of links and lets the reader choose. An answer engine composes a response before the reader visits a source. Brands that appear in that answer get considered. Brands that do not are invisible, and no rankings report shows the absence.

How AI answers choose their sources.

An answer engine assembles its response from pages it can retrieve, understand, and trust. Four properties make a page easier to retrieve, understand, and cite.

Structured data

Schema markup tells an engine what a page is: a product, an article, a review, a price. Schema makes the page's subject, format, and stated facts easier to interpret.

Clear claims

Engines lift sentences that answer a question directly. A page that says what a thing costs, fits, or does, in one sentence, is easier to quote than one that circles the point.

Citable pages

Answer engines prefer sources they can attribute: a named organization or author, a date, and claims a reader can check. Thin, unsourced pages get skipped.

Entity consistency

An engine has to be sure who you are before it names you. The same brand name, description, and facts across your site and the places that mention you make you a safe entity to recommend.

GEO builds on SEO. It does not replace it.

The foundations are the same. A site an answer engine can use is a site a search engine can crawl: fast, well linked, written by people who know the subject, and backed by real authority. Work that only chases one surface usually helps the other anyway.

The difference is the unit of measurement. SEO measures positions on a results page. GEO measures presence inside an answer, and the two do not move together. A page can rank fourth for a query and still be the source the answer quotes, or rank first and never be named.

GEO also spreads the target. There is no single results page to win anymore; each answer engine composes its own response, and they disagree with each other. The practical consequence is that visibility has to be measured engine by engine, question by question, not read off one rankings report.

What to measure.

Attribution in AI answers is blunter than in paid media. Three signals carry most of the truth, and they move when the work is working.

1

Presence in AI answers

For a fixed set of real buying questions, is the brand named? Tracked across engines and over time, because engines change their answers and disagree with each other.

2

Citations

Which of your pages the answers quote or link. Citations show which content is doing the work and where to build next.

3

Branded query growth

Track branded search alongside AI visibility. A rise can support the case that more people are encountering the brand, but it is not direct attribution.

How Texin applies it.

We run GEO and SEO as one practice: a query plan built from real buyer questions, reviewed content with structured data, and a scoped set of saved AI-search observations. The full service is on the SEO & AI search page.

Portal can keep those sampled answers, citations, and competitor mentions beside the rest of the reporting, with coverage and capture dates preserved.

Common questions.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO builds on SEO. The same crawlable site, clear content, and earned authority that rank in traditional search are what answer engines draw from. GEO adds a new measurement surface, presence inside the answer, and a few practices that matter more there: structured data, direct claims, and entity consistency.

How long does GEO take to work?

Answer engines re-answer questions continuously, so changes can surface faster than a traditional rankings cycle. Authority still compounds over months. Anyone quoting an exact timeline is guessing; the honest approach is to measure from a baseline and report movement.

Can you guarantee a brand appears in AI answers?

No, and no one can. Each engine decides its own answers, and different engines answer the same question differently. The work raises the probability of being named and cited, and measurement tells you whether it is happening.

Does GEO require new content?

Usually some. Existing pages often need restructuring before new pages are worth writing: direct answers near the top, structured data, and claims a machine can lift cleanly. After that, new content targets the questions where the brand is absent from the answers.
